Travel Log for North Coast Road Trip

PDX TV Reports just wrapped up a month of Road Trip segments from Southern Oregon, and now PDX TV Reports has partnered again with www.Doitnw.com for a month of Road Trip segments from the Coast!  There’s more Summer left, and more road to cover, so my photographer Chris and I hopped in the car and headed for the beach!

Mo's RestaurantOur first stop is in Cannon Beach where we found the Tolovana Inn, and right behind the Inn, one of the most famous places on the Oregon  Coast, Mo’s Restaurant!  Famous for their Clam Chowder; which I highly recommend ordering in a cannon ball (that’s what they call a bread bowl at Mo’s).  I also recommend ordering the Slumgullion (which is Clam Chowder topped with shrimp)!  We also learned to make a delicious boulliabaise at Mo’s and found out that Mo’s really is named after the owner Mo (who was a kind and generous woman who, according to those who knew her, could smoke and drink with the best of them)!  Mo’s has five locations on the Coast, but Cannon Beach is the only location that serves a delicious breakfast menu!

Bellies full of Chowder, we jumped back in the car and drove north to Seaside.

Pig N' PancakeOur first stop in Seaside is another coastal legend; Pig N’ Pancake.  We arrived at Pig N’ Pancake at 11am on a Wednesday.  The owner told us that they would be busy, but I didn’t realize just how busy until we walked in the door!  A line stretched from the hostess podium out the door, and stayed that way all the way through the lunch hour!  We shot most of our segments from the “pass” (the counter where waitresses pick up dishes from the kitchen).  Food flew out of the kitchen and off to hungry customers as Wayne, one of the owners pointed out some specialties of the house.  From the famous pancakes (Marianne, one of the founders is especially fond of the Swedish variety) to the Eggs Benedict (a favorite of the other founder, Bob), to the delicious lunch selections, Pig N’ Pancake has enjoyed a loyal following since opening in the 1960’s and that popularity continues today.   You can find all 3 Pig N’ Pancake Coastal locations on www.Doitnw.com.

Chris, my photographer, and I stayed for lunch at Pig N’ Pancake after our shoot.  The Blueberry Pancakes had Chris’ name all over them, and I had a half order of the Hawaiian Grilled Cheese (ham & pineapple) YUM!

After chowder at Mo’s and lunch at Pig N’ Pancake, you’d think we’d be full and happy and ready to head back to Portland…Nope!  Not us!  In search of yet more fantastic Coastal destinations, we consulted www.doitnw.com and walked a ½ block to the Seaside location of Dooger’s!

Dooger's RestaurantDooger's has three locations on the Oregon Coast and is serious about Seafood!  The Clam Chowder at Dooger’s is some of the best I’ve ever had (and I was lucky enough to get a recipe card for the make-at-home version before I left.  The chowder is so thick with clams that you feel a little better about the savory creamy broth you’re eating (hey, it’s mostly seafood in every bite…right)?  Another can’t miss item at Dooger’s are the crab legs, either served traditionally with drawn butter, or Cajun style, the plump Dungeness Crab legs come served already shelled (all the better for eating more in a short amount of time)!  Dooger’s is another legendary family-owned restaurant on the coast, and we learned that many of the waitstaff has been employed at Dooger’s over 20 years!  If you want some serious seafood on the Coast (and who doesn’t) Dooger’s is a great stop!

I would say we walked back to our car for one more stop on the Oregon Coast, but after the Chowder at Mo’s and Dooger’s, the lunch at Pig N’ Pancake, and the crab legs at Dooger’s…we more or less waddled back to our car and drove north to Astoria where we found the amazing Cannery Café!

Cannery CafeThe Cannery Café really is housed in an old cannery on a wharf in Astoria.  The view is amazing, you can watch ships come in and out of port, and on a nice day, you can sit outside on the fantastic patio and enjoy a little sea air with your meal!  Cannery Café is the sort of place that you immediately feel the need to tell everyone to visit!  Everything from the great atmosphere to the amazing food make this spot a can’t-miss destination!  Dana, the owner brought out breakfast, lunch and dinner options, each plate prettier than the last.  We were lucky enough to try the Surf & Turf with Filet Mignon and a mélange of vegetables and prawns sautéed in white wine. We also got to sample the Salmon topped with a mixture of hazelnuts and dried cranberries.  Along with your meal at Cannery Café, you absolutely must try the Gunderbuns!  The house rolls are something like a cross between a soft pretzel and a dinner roll and are topped with a light crumbling of Sea Salt-so good you don’t even need the butter!

Finally, almost unable to walk, Chris and I piled back into our trusty station vehicle and drove back to PDX TV in a blissfull food-induced haze.  When you take a road trip to the Oregon Coast, check out www.Doitnw.com before you go.  This is just an amazingly small sampling of the many fantastic restaurants you can find listed on the site!  Because www.Doitnw.com covers the entire state and SW Washington, you can use it to plan stops on your road trip or find a destination, but the great thing is, every restaurant you find on the site will be locally owned and I guarantee delicious!
